About Us

After 20 years of being a graphic designer in Minneapolis/St. Paul my career changed direction when we moved to Pine Island Minnesota.  In 2001, a few kind people asked to purchase patterns of my original designs before I even thought about starting the business. It’s hard to believe it has been over 20 years since Pine Island Primitives began! Thank you to all of you who have supported the business and allowed me to teach you about the wonderful art of rug hooking. I am truly blessed and humbled by you all!

Sally and Keith Kallin

We live in our new home/studio in Lake City Minnesota among the beautiful bluffs near the Mississippi River.  The light and bright studio is attached to the home. There is a separate driveway and entrance to the studio around the corner on Levi Path.  It is wonderful to share this happy place by offering more workshops at home. After years of traveling all across the country it is nice to be home more but I do still travel for teaching and vending.

More Wool Than You Can Shake a Hook At!

The obsession has taken over! You are welcome to visit the studio to see over 1000 yards of yummy hand-dyed and washed wool, hooks, patterns and many of my finished rugs as well as lots of other goodies for rug hooking and wool applique. Because of traveling to teach, the studio is open by appointment only. Please contact me if you are interested in visiting or attending one of the workshops listed in the Classes & Events section.

Less than a mile away, is Lake Pepin, the largest lake on the Mississippi River. This area has restaurants, hotels, shopping at the local art galleries and charming shops, really good Walleye fishing, hiking, boating, bird-watching, leaf-peeping, skiing, camping, and golfing.

Since we are located on a major flyway you have the opportunity to do some awesome bird-watching. The National Eagle Center is in the nearby town of Wabasha. During the bald eagle migration we had the incredible experience of spotting of 85 eagles at one time!  The historic river town of Red Wing, MN is also nearby. There you can find shopping, lodging and dining. The area is filled with artists and festivals throughout the year.
