(Purchase of a Fragment kit is required for class. NOT available for purchase on the website.)
Fragment Patterns are divided into three categories: (click the links to see kits)
1.) Animals
2.) Florals
3.) Pictorials

When I first saw Carol Weatherman’s “Fragment” rugs I thought it was a wonderful stack of Antique rugs! Photos do not do justice to the rugs. You really need to see them in person to appreciate the technique that Carol has created. She has put in over 9 months of trial and error to perfect this process. They truly look and feel old, with moth holes, repairs, and worn wool, saddened to give them age. There may even be a mouse hole! Carol will continue to create new rugs that will be added to the website as she completes them.

Carol’s inspiration came from an early hooked piece that she purchased. It was cut to a smaller size; most likely this fragment was the only salvageable section.

Definition of a Fragment: Patterns that are a manageable size to hook so that a full understanding of finishing a piece can be achieved in class.

primitive style is not easy to achieve unless your textiles have been aged in a manner of believability. Each Student will have aged textiles available for their use.

Wool and other textiles will be used. Early pieces contained varied textiles (used what they had) for there were no wool stores for rug hooking in the 1800’s. Clean burlap is used for a base. This is not a messy burlap. Your piece will be light weight just like an early rug.

Instructions will be given on hooking techniques, tricks on wearing fibers and finishing.

The result will be a finished piece with the provenance of the 19th century. The students can apply these lessons on future projects.

The feel of each piece is very light weight, fibers are worn, and colors are aged; this is hard to capture in a photo.

Summary: An unconventional class has many surprises! It will be a fun lesson and time passes quickly.

Students choose their kits for class 2 months prior to class. It is best to choose a design that you can finish in class. This way, you have the advantage of applying the techniques learned in class. And, who doesn’t love to go home with a finished project?

NOTE: Fragment kits and patterns are sold only to class participants as of this date. Students need to order them directly from Pine Island Primitives. Without having the experience of a Fragments class, it would be impossible to achieve the desired results. There are a few of these designs in a larger size available on linen (see “Early Adaptation Rugs”).

All Fragment patterns are hand-drawn on clean burlap. Uncut wool and textiles will be provided for kits.  Colors may vary.

NOTE: Please respect Carol’s creative abilities as not to copy the patterns in any form nor teach the Fragment method. The patterns are for your one-time personal use. What you learn in the Fragment class is not for you to teach or share with others. By purchasing a pattern, kit or class you agree to these terms. This is how Carol taught the class and I will carry out her wishes.
